Energy Choice in Connecticut

Connecticut is one of the 18 U.S. states with the deregulated energy market, both for residential and commercial customers. Residents are free to compare electric rates in the competitive marketplace and switch their supply to another provider – for a better price! Connecticuters are increasingly aware of the benefits that energy deregulation brings – over 30% or 450,000 residents and businesses have already switched!

Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA)

Public Utilities Regulatory Authority is the regulatory body responsible for overseeing the competitive energy market and ensuring that Connecticut electric suppliers are delivering on their promises to the consumers.

To empower Connecticuters to make smart energy choices, PURA runs a state-wide electricity rates comparison website, called EnergizeCT. This website tool allows energy consumers to:

  • Compare available electricity rates by entering their zip code
  • View the list of certified CT energy companies
  • Find additional information about energy metering, energy bills, and other FAQs

Partner Utilities

There are two major utility companies in Connecticut that participate in energy choice programs – Eversource and United Illuminating Company (UI).

Eversource (formerly known as CL&P)

Eversource transmits and delivers electricity to 1.2 million customers in most of the state of Connecticut. The company is known for its excellent customer service and reliable energy.

United Illuminating Company (UI)

The United Illuminating Company (UI) servicing 324,000 residential, commercial, and industrial consumers in the Greater New Haven and Bridgeport areas.

Partners

EnergizeCT leans on several partners in order to offer attractive rebates and energy savings to energy consumers. These partners include:

Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund (CEEF)

CEEF works to advance the efficient use of energy; reduce air pollution and negative environmental impacts. The organization works with energy companies in CT and supporting programs that provide Conencticuters with financial incentives to reduce the amount of energy used in their homes and businesses.

Energy Efficiency Board

CEEF programs are reviewed by the Energy Efficiency Board, a group of energy experts that provide advice on how programs should be structured and delivered. If you are interested to read about the achievements of the CEEF in your local area, you can read the Board’s Programs and Operations Report available online.

Connecticut Green Bank

Connecticut has an ambitious goal to have nearly 50% of state energy to be produced from renewable energy sources by 2050. One way towards achieving it is the nation’s first state “Green Bank”, founded in 2011 to:

  • Develop innovative programs to support clean energy investment in the state
  • Support green energy consumption in the state by making it more cost-competitive
  • Funding green energy initiatives, projects, and developments that not only stimulate demand for green energy but also create new jobs for Connecticuters

How can energy consumers benefit? The Connecticut Green Bank offers attractive incentives and rebates for the homeowners interested in supporting the green energy use movement, such as the Residential Solar Incentive Program (RSIP), Smart-E Loans ad others.
