Shop for Electricity in Connecticut

Electricity shopping in Connecticut has become a common practice for many Connecticut residences. Much of the success centers around an educated consumer base and competitive electric prices that have kept rates below Connecticut Power and Light (CL&P) and United Illuminating default rates.

If consumers are able to find lower prices than their utility default rates when they shop for electricity, then the decision to switch companies becomes easy as it is now simply about whether the consumer wants to save money on their electricity bill or not, usually the case is that they do.

The two major Connecticut utility companies, CL&P and United Illuminating, offer default electric rates for their customers who choose not to shop for electricity. These default prices, known as the price to compare, are determined through an auction process overseen by the Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority. The Utilities do not directly profit from these default rates, so they are indifferent when their customers decide to buy power from competitive energy companies. CL&P and United Illuminating make their money from the delivery charges posted on the monthly electric bill. The revenue from the supply generation charges, the prices that are open to choice, are passed through to energy companies who have won the auction to provide service to default paying customers.

Consumers who shop for electricity in Connecticut can save money on their electric bills with no added risks or uncertainties. The Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority set rules for competitive electricity companies that does not allow them to charge additional fees on top of the rates that they advertise. In addition, the switch is a seamless process that the customer does not notice; there are no lines or wires that have to be tampered with in order to start paying less for electricity. The power continues to be delivered by the same utility company (CL&P, United Illuminating) that has always delivered the power, and they continue to send the monthly electric bill and respond to power failures and emergencies.
