Houston Power

Houston power customers who have not shopped for competitive rates in a long time will find that they can lower their electric bills substantially by taking the time to compare electric prices.

While Houston has one of the country’s most active electricity choice markets, many people who signed contracts in previous years have not stayed on top of their agreements and are now paying month to month variable rates with their electric companies. Variable rates recently skyrocketed as the record setting heat wave in Texas this summer pushed up the power demand and prices on the wholesale electricity market.

Having the power to choose your electric supplier is more than just finding a cheap rate. To really take advantage of electric choice customers need to stay on top of their energy agreements and not get stuck with a variable rate when the market takes a spike as it did in the summers of 2008 and 2011.

Depending on where in the Houston metro area you live, your electric utility is either Centerpoint or Texas New Mexico Power. These are the companies that deliver the power to your home and take care of the management and maintenance of the power lines and wires. Their fees are included in the power prices that you pay on the bill.

If you haven’t taken the time to compare electric rates in awhile, grab your monthly electric bill and see how much you can save.
